How this scam works
A caller claims to be from the police, a tax authority, or a court. They tell you there's a warrant for your arrest, or that you owe money and must pay immediately to avoid serious consequences. The panic they create is the tool they use to bypass your logic.
Another common variant is sextortion, an email claiming someone has recorded you and will share the footage unless you pay. The goal is shame and fear, designed to make you act without thinking.
Red flags to watch for
- the caller demands immediate payment to avoid arrest, legal action, or public exposure
- they insist you stay on the line and don't speak to anyone else
- they ask for payment via unusual methods such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, or direct transfers to unfamiliar accounts
- they refuse to give you time to verify their identity or seek advice
- real authorities never demand fines or settlements over the phone
What to do
- hang up or close the email immediately. Disconnecting breaks the psychological hold
- never use contact details provided by the person threatening you
- look up the official number for your local police station or the relevant authority independently and call them directly to verify the claim
- talk to a trusted friend or family member before taking any action
- if you're being blackmailed, contact the police or a victim support organisation
