How this scam works
You receive an unexpected message from someone claiming to be a lawyer, government official, or lottery representative. They tell you a large sum of money is waiting for you — an inheritance, a prize, a loan approval. All you need to do is pay a small upfront fee to release the funds.
After the first payment, a new problem appears requiring another fee. Then another. The promised windfall never arrives.
Red flags to watch for
- you're asked to pay an upfront fee to receive a prize, inheritance, or loan you didn't apply for
- the offer arrived entirely unsolicited and promises large sums for no effort
- the sender insists on secrecy and asks you not to tell anyone
- the email address contains typos, unusual formatting, or a generic domain
- the opportunity creates a sense of urgency or excitement that makes it hard to think clearly
What to do
- search the name of the organisation or lottery online alongside the word "scam" to check if it's a known scheme
- check the sender's email address carefully for irregularities
- talk to a trusted friend, family member, or advisor before taking any action
- never pay upfront fees to receive money you're owed. Legitimate organisations don't operate this way
